HOMAGE I was developed and made for the Colour Wave group exhibition at Southern Guild Gallery and is conceived as a series of horizontal light paintings that explore the relationships/interactions between different colours and form.
The ‘paintings’ are developed as low tables in order to bring them into the living area where they can be observed from different angles and act as objects of contemplation. Each table is comprised of a base that contains lighting components, made from stainless steel or aluminium, and a top made from acid-etched low-iron glass. The glass acts as a medium for the coloured light, allowing the light to ‘stick’ to it. There is a level of translucency in the glass that allows one to see beyond the plane of the glass and perceive the volume/space behind it, much like seeing objects in ice, where one can see rough, ghostly forms but very little detail. This spatial aspect is achieved by lighting the internal space of the base so that the colour or form that one perceives changes as one moves around the table, creating a sense of space that is projected onto the flat surface of the glass. This perceived depth is what makes the object compelling and meditative. The bases act as three dimensional frames that inform the specific colour gradients for each painting, clad in a reflective material so as to appear light and ever-changing.
